If you’re finding you’ve got time on your hands, but haven’t got either the tools or the skillset to carry out your home improvement plans, don’t get frustrated. There are plenty of small DIY jobs which you can complete yourself without damaging your bank balance (or any aspect of your home!) and which will add character and individuality to your living space, regardless of your DIY abilities.
Turn your porch into a handy area with a quirky storage unit to keep keys, shopping lists, dog leads and whatever other little essentials from cluttering up your space. Maybe even a letter rack as an ‘in-tray’ and a boot storage unit to avoid floor level mayhem. You could even splash the walls with a coat of yellow or green paint for a colour boost and as an easy way to bring the outside in.
Treat Your Windows!
With summer approaching it’s a delight to welcome the extra sunlight into our homes. As we’re spending more time indoors than usual too, why not freshen up your window dressing with a bold, inspired print. If you hang the curtain pole higher, your window will seem larger and you’ll add extra height to your space.
If you’ve got an alcove or a bay window begging for some attention, turn it into an eye-catching new area. Add a small bench and a cushion for a window seat, maybe with some useful storage built in, and enjoy the view. Transform a hallway recess or an under the stairs area into a work from home space with a minimalist desk and chair, frame a few photos for the wall and add an unusual desk lamp for practicality and ambience. Even a coat of paint for a planned statement wall will mean you can add a few floating shelves at a later date.
Whether you replace plain door knobs with crystal or porcelain ones, jazz up standard shelf brackets with a bold paint colour, or splash a tired looking chest of drawers or kitchen dresser with your favourite Farrow and Ball shade, you can be assured that no-one else will be boasting your new look.
Hanging baskets, window boxes and planters add an instant colour boost and green fingers are not required! Many garden centres are taking orders to deliver either just the plants, or holders already made up. These splashes of nature will make your home look automatically more inviting. You can repaint your front door too to reflect the sunny season! For the finishing touch, outdoor lighting will create a cosy ambience; whether fairy lights, lanterns or tea lights, all of which are readily available, easy to use and inexpensive.
