Since 2016 the UK has been going mad for the Danish trend that is ‘Hygge’. Pronounced “hue-ga”, the purpose of this trend is to bring the concept of togetherness and cosiness into your home; think candles and fluffy throws! So we’ve teamed up with fellow flooring experts at Rug Mountain to see how we can bring the Hygge effect into a modern British bedroom.

Of course there are a number of things you can do to transform your bedroom before we even get to rugs, starting with the centrepiece; your bed. By using lighter linens such as white and greys you can create a wonderful base for some stunning faux fur throws and thick knitted blankets. If you pair these with a feature headboard such as a dark velvet and throw in some cushions with different textures; we’re talking knitted covers, faux fur and autumnal browns – you’re onto a winner!
Your headboard shouldn’t be the only bold feature in your bedroom, your walls are an important aspect when it comes to going Hygge, don’t be afraid to go darker. The whole purpose of Hygge is to create a warm and cosy atmosphere, think greys and dark matte colours. These dark tones make a perfect accompaniment for soft lighting; in today’s society there is a common rule that you can never have enough t-lights and this applies to your new Scandinavian room too!

Now, onto the main focus; rugs. How can something as simple as a rug help contribute to an entire trend? Well, they actually play a staple part in the world of Hygge and it’s all down to the type of rug that is used.
Let’s start with the colour; as mentioned above natural earthy colours are the most suitable for this trend. Neutral and pastels such as soft grey, ivory and sand are ideal. In fact, nothing says Hygge quite like an ivory shaggy rug and it’s a treat for the toes too! Ivory is ideal for creating that overall Scandinavian vibe in your living room and looks fantastic when paired with blonde/pale wood floors. Grey rugs also make a welcome modern addition to your room, in fact grey has been one of the most used colours in the interior world over the last 12 months. With so many variations of the colour itself you can create whatever kind of ambience you feel is right and couple it up with any accessory. Sand rugs can really help to unleash earthy and natural tones in your room, making you feel at one with the great outdoors.
The texture of the rug itself also plays a pivotal role in your room, whether you go for a shaggy rug or are more of a sheepskin/animal hide kind of person! Sheepskin rugs have been around for a long time and are perfect for adding warmth to your bedroom, as well as being a great focal point too. Aside of being great feature points, sheepskin rugs can also be used as an alternative throw too, adding a real authentic feel to your room. As far as we’re concerned, the main focus of the Hygge effect is to create comfort and with it being your bedroom, this is super important.
Please remember, not all rugs have to be plain; the Danes don’t mind a pattern either! Geometric patterns are all the rage in the world of Hygge (the kind that almost hurt your eyes due to their criss-crossing nature..!) These types of pattern are guaranteed to transport you to a cushy log-cabin deep in the Scandinavian forest…just imagine!
So there you have it, just a few little tips and tricks to create a true Danish feel and turn your bedroom into a Scandinavian haven.
